I should state that I'm hardly a fan of mainstream country. Most of it sounds
like rehashed 70's LA (i.e. Eagles, Jackson Browne) Rock. Artist of the like of
Garth Brooks are as "Anti-Country" as I can imagine. The music of the
working people has fallen into the same formulas and traps that "alternative"
and "pop" music face. If you aren’t a pretty face and radio friendly you get
no coverage or airplay. Pick up an issue of "Rolling Stone" and you'll see
it's not that different from "17" or "People" magazines. Listening to the
radio is often intolerable...that aside there are still great artist in this
world.
Maybe you recall a mid 80's hit, "Copperhead Road"? Most likely not. Anyway
the guy singing that has gone to hell and is back. He literally spent time in
prison for an out of control cocaine habit. Since 1995 Steve has released 4
albums, all of which will be in my top ten of the decade.
In 1995 he released the most acoustic, folky "Slow Train A Comin'". This
moving album has 9 original songs and covers that include Lennon/McCartney
and Townes Van Zandt. The 1996 release "I Feel Alright", is extremely
personal. All songs are original Steve Earle and awesome. For anyone who
think that all country music sucks, this is proof positive that country music
can be the best form of entertainment . Check out Steve's song "South
Nashville Blues". You feel as though you are stuck inside the heart and soul
of an addict.
Steve Earle continued his personal writing and emotion on El Corazon(1997).
This CD is the greatest tip of the hat ever given to Woody Guthrie. Earle is
very folky on this CD and every song has a story and message. Steve pulls no
punches, he lays his feelings, beliefs, and politics on the table. In 1999,
Steve released "The Mountain" with the Del McCoury Band. This may be one the
all-time greatest Blue Grass recordings. Steve set out to make music that
would impress the likes of Bill Monroe. I'm certain Bill is smiling from the
other side of the pearly gates.
In addition, Steve has been a guest on various CD's by the likes of EmmyLou
Harris, Nanci Griffith, and Julie Miller. I expect more greatness from Steve
in the future. Next year he has another CD coming out. He also will release
a book, teach at the Chicago Folk School, continue touring, writing, and
working on his personal political causes.
